This beautiful place is Hafod Garregog National Nature Reserve in Snowdonia, owned and managed by @ntwales . The marshy grassland supports one of only 3 silver studded blue butterfly populations (inset pic) in Gwynedd, the others occurring on South Stack on Anglesey and on the Great Orme, a very long way away for these little butterflies. The fascinating thing about this population is that it has a symbiotic relationship with the black garden ant, in whose nest the larvae of the silver studded blue find protection in return for a sugary secretion wanted by the ants. How that came about in evolved deep time who knows? To keep the habitat nice for all these species we graze with hardy cattle. Its important that we don’t lose these species, they’re all linked in the web of life #roundriver #nature #snowdonia #nationaltrust #naturerecovery #naturefriendlyfarming
A hidden gem. Ancient oaks in a medieval deer park cared for by the staff of @ntcarmarthenshire @ntwales The diversity of life here, because of the antiquity and the undisturbed nature of the habitat, is amazing. Some of the rarest lichens and mosses in the UK grow on these trees #nature #trees #lichens #naturerecovery #wales #llandeilo #dinefwrpark
